Forego
Determination, courage and gallantry are words that have been assigned to the great Forego: an imposing, heavy and strong gelding that was amazingly light on his feet, and one of the most unsound horses in racing. It was said that he only had one “good” leg.
Regardless of the distance or weight he carried, his will to win drove him to victory. He ran from six furlongs to two miles, and carried 130 pounds or more in 24 graded stakes. In all, he defeated eight champions or classic winners.
Horse of the Year for three consecutive years and Champion Handicapper (older dirt male) for four, Forego was one of the all-time stars of the handicap division of the 20th Century.
