Join us for an exciting EquineEd event on September 7th featuring Kaoru Tsuchiya Hawley and Sandy Hawley. Come to the Kentucky Horse Park for a live Q and A with Sandy and Kaoru, where we dive into their lives as jockeys. The couple married in May 2019, but their history together and on the track spans several decades. Our Q and A will cover their lives on the track and the critical work they continue to work on to help Jockeys.
Sandy and Kaoru are both historic figures on the trackโone a Hall of Famer and one a trailblazer for the sport. Sandy is a Hall of Fame Jockey inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, and Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. Sandy was a dominant force in the saddle, winning an Eclipse Award for outstanding jockey and breaking records for number of wins and total winnings for a single year. Kaoru is a trailblazing jockey from Japan who was the first female jockey to race in Japan and the first female Japanese jockey to saddle up for a race in the United States. Her influence on the sport continues today, helping horses and jockeys from Japan travel to the United States. Now both retired, they continue their work in the equine world through charity and helping bring jockeys together off the track.
The EquineEd event will take place in the Kentucky Horse Park Visitor Center on Saturday, September 7th, at 12:30 pm. As always, the lectures are FREE and open to the public.
