KENTUCKY HORSE PARK YOUTH RIDING CAMP 2020

A message from Amanda Reardon, Camp Director.

Good Afternoon All,

I hope this message everyone well and healthy.

After much thought and consideration, I am reaching out to everyone today with the sad news we have decided to cancel the Kentucky Horse Park Summer Youth Riding Camp program for 2020 due to the uncertainty of the course of the COVID – 19. With months of planning and preparation from both the Kentucky Horse Park, its staff, and each of you that have made travel arrangements and plans for visiting us this summer we truly are saddened by this decision but want to ensure the health and safety of everyone involved. Refunds will be issued for all summer camp payments, please allow up 1 -3 business days, our team is working hard to have these done ASAP.

With hopes of a fresh start for the summer of 2021 I hope all of you keep our Summer Youth Riding Camp program in mind, I would love to see each and every one of you in the future. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Something I would love to share with all of you and your Youth Riders; in the Equine Department are still working hard to ensure the full care of our horses here at the park, I want to invite all of you to join us on our Facebook live videos every Wednesday and Friday at 2:00 pm. Each live video features a different area of the park, this coming Wednesday, May 6th at 2:00 pm you can join me for a virtual Horseback Ride (for all returning students, I may be on a horse you know!) and then again I’ll be live on Friday, May 8th at 2:00 pm for a live Groom and Shine. You can find us on the Kentucky Horse Park Facebook page @kyhorsepark  orhttps://www.facebook.com/kyhorsepark . Like I said these are live videos and I would love to see you join us.

If you do not have access to Facebook these videos are posted to our website page, you can find them at the following link:https://kyhorsepark.com/visit-khp/virtual-tours/.

I hope to see everyone out at the park in the future.

Best,

Amanda

The Kentucky Horse Park Summer Youth Riding Camp is the place to be this summer! The summer riding program is designed to enrich your youth rider’s equestrian abilities with group lessons with our certified instructor and variety of different breeds of horses and ponies to work with. Camp options vary based on experience level and interested. The beginner level is open to new riders with no to little experience or those that have been riding and would like to have a skills refresher. Our experienced level camps will be for riders that have a minimum of two years riding experience and are able to walk/trot a horse independently; this usually consists of riding or being actively involved in a riding lesson program over the course of the year.

Camp activities will include at least one group lesson a day, field trips to different areas of the Kentucky Horse Park so see shows and presentations, beating the heat at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Campground Swimming pool, and arts and crafts. Riders will need to pack a lunch and snack each day. If riders do not have boots or helmets we have some to borrow.

Meet our Camp Instructor: Amanda Reardon

Originally from Maryland, Amanda has been riding and working with horses for over 20 years. Starting her riding career as a young pony clubber, advancing over the years to competitive riding with high school and college-level teams.  During this time, she trained and worked with a number of professionals in the equestrian field including Steuart Pittman and Sharon Myers.  At 18, Amanda became a Certified Horseback Riding Instructor through the Certified Horseman’s Association (CHA), completing the course as one of its youngest graduates.

Amanda pursued her love for horses by enrolling in the Equine Science and Management Program at the University of Kentucky in 2012 and was a member of the equestrian team.  Amanda also worked in various areas of the equine industry during her time at Kentucky including teaching assistant for the college’s Equine Handling courses, managing and teaching lessons, and camps at a Lexington lesson farm, and spending time working in the thoroughbred breeding industry with mares and foals and yearling sales.

In May 2015 Amanda earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Equine Science and Management with a minor in Agricultural Economics from the University of Kentucky.  Immediately following graduation, Amanda joined the Kentucky Horse Park staff continuing her pursuit of teaching and where she currently manages the Equine Education Department.

At the Kentucky Horse Park, Amanda has developed, planned and executed four-years of summer camps with the Mustang Troop Program and the Summer Youth Riding Program. Amanda works with and teaches over 100 children up to the age of 18 every summer. Amanda manages a barn with 15 horses of various breeds and has a seasonal staff of 3-6 workers. She also started and runs the first riding lesson program at the Kentucky Horse Park. Her most recent accomplishment has been creating and organizing an open level horse show. The “Spring Opener” is the newest annual event at the park, a two-day, open level English and Western horse show held in the Spring.  This year, for the shows inaugural event, there were almost 200 entries.

Amanda has been an active member of CHA since 2011.  She earned her first certification with Mrs. Polly Barger at the Kentucky Horse Park, and this is where she recalls falling in love with teaching and the Kentucky Horse Park.  Amanda has gone on to earn her Master Level Certification in Fall 2018 and is moving forward with her education and practices to earn her Clinicians Certification.
