The Rocky Mountain Horse Association (RMHA) will be holding their 25th annual International Horse Show at the Kentucky Horse Park, September 10-14, in the Covered Arena.
The Rocky Mountain Horse Association was founded in 1986 as a non-profit organization in Kentucky, and is dedicated to the preservation, promotion and breeding of the Rocky Mountain Horse. The Rocky Mountain Horse as a recognized breed is relatively new, but these horses go back more than 70 years to a small farm owned by Sam Tuttle, in Estill County Kentucky, where he developed these horses which had a natural single foot (4-beat gait) for riding at the Natural Bridge State Park. Mr. Tuttle’s line of horse descended from a stallion originally from the Rocky Mountains which were bred to Kentucky mares. There are more than 19,000 registered Rocky Mountain Horses in the United States, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, and found in several countries throughout Europe.
The Rocky Mountain Horse Stallion Showcase will be from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Friday, September 13, in the Covered Arena. This is a time for stallion owners to promote their stallions, presenting them individually, and spectators to see some of the most beautiful Rocky Mountain Horse stallions. After the Stallion Showcase presentations, there will be an opportunity to meet the stallions face-to-face in the show ring.
The Stallion Row Barn will be open Friday, September 13, from 9:00 am - 9:00 pm, giving stallion owners an additional opportunity for visitors to admire some of the world's finest Rocky Mountain stallions standing side by side. On Stallion Row the many talented stallion handlers will be eager to share their knowledge, display photos and ribbons or trophies of their Rocky Mountain stallions.
Ride A "Rocky" Day is from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm on Friday and Saturday, September 13 and 14. These rides will be paid for by donation and an excellent opportunity to experience what it is like to ride one of the world's most beloved naturally gaited horse breeds.
Sundy Best, Eastern Kentucky's hottest country music duo, is the perfect fit for the 25th International Rocky Mountain Horse Celebration. The legacy of horses, storytellers and balladeers will come together in an evening of front porch melodies and song lyrics grown out of the rocky topsoil of Eastern Kentucky's Appalachian Mountains, and brought to the Covered Arena Stage at 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm on Friday, September 13.
Admission to this event will be included with park admission. Several local vendors will be set up around the show ring concourse daily. Events for the whole family are planned throughout the week. The show will culminate on Saturday evening with the Grand Championship performance.
