LEXINGTON, KY—59-days to go—Musicians from the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center will assemble at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games to showcase the distinctive music of New Orleans and America’s Southern roots during the Opening Ceremonies on September 25.
“It is an honor to participate in this event, especially an event that is going to be broadcast around the world,” said Victor Goines, clarinet player and music director for the Games. “It gives us an opportunity to showcase our talents and to demonstrate how we feel about the music of New Orleans.”
Jazz at Lincoln Center will be a part of the “a journey through the South” segment of the Opening Ceremonies, which features a Mardi Gras section that will showcase the sights and sounds of the popular American celebration.
Goines said the musicians he selected to perform at the Opening Ceremonies are not only some of the best Jazz musicians in the Deep South, but also in the world. They are all part of Jazz at Lincoln Center, which Goines said is like a big family for talented jazz musicians in the United States.
Jazz at Lincoln Center is one of the prestigious programs of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. The organization became a part of Lincoln Center in 1991 and has since produced concerts throughout New York City, created a radio series on National Public Radio, recorded CDs and toured around the world.
“Jazz at Lincoln Center represents a rich tradition of America’s musical landscape,” said Everett McCorvey, executive producer of the Opening Ceremonies. “We are thrilled to be able to showcase this genre to the audience in the stadium and around the world.”
Jazz at Lincoln Center also collaborates with other artists and symphonies, performs in parades and ceremonies, keeps an extensive jazz library of scores and arrangements and provides educational programs to people of all ages.
Jazz is a historical genre that Goines said has evolved from many different ceremonies and celebrations including picnics, weddings and backyard jam sessions. Goines said his group of musicians will bring everything they have to offer to the Games, collaborating with each other as well as other performers in this section of the Opening Ceremonies.
“Our goal is to leave our listeners excited about the music, excited about what New Orleans is today and leave them in a very celebratory state,” Goines said.

The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games are the world championships of eight equestrian disciplines recognized by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI).
